Answer to Alexandra's question

Hi Alexandra, the plant in the photo that you sent to me is Schefflera and is a good house plant. Let the soil dry out before you water it again. It should be placed close to natural light but it does not need direct sunlight. I noticed the plant in your photo has spider mites; they are very tiny insects that live in the underside of the leaves and suck sap from the plant until it dies. Spider mites are almost impossible to get rid of unless you spray the plant with insecticide soap but it does not guarantee a permanent solution. The insecticide soap kills the bugs but not the eggs so you have to be constant spraying at least twice a week. I know this is not your plant but if you are planning to buy one, you must prevent spider mites to build colonies in your plant. They hide under some kind of web and produce a sticky syrup. Do not put the plant in a hot and dry place because that is what they like. Spray the foliage with plain water a couple of times per week to create a moist environment that they do not like. Good luck with your plant and let me know if you need more information.

A focal point

A bird bath or water feature can be used as a focal point in your garden and serve another purpose, fresh water for wildlife.

A difficult place?

Do you have a place where nothing grows? Perhaps too wet? Try something different like a decorative design with rocks.
